Which one has the most
fragrance?
In my opinion, the English lavenders (angustifolias) such as the pink and white Melissa
and the beautiful blue-purple Royal Velvet and the hybrid intermedias such as Grosso
and Provence have the sweetest fragrance.
|
 |
Which one has the darkest
purple?
My favorites are Hidcote, Royal Velvet, Lodden Blue, and Betty Blue.

 |
Is there one small enough
to keep in a pot?
Thumbelina Leah has a mature size of 8-12 inches, Blue Cushion and Royal Velvet get
about 12 to 14 inches. Depending on the size of our pot, always making sure that the
roots are not crowded and drainage is good.

How much sun does lavender
need?
Lavender is native to the Mediterranean region; therefore it loves sun, at least five
hours a day.
|
 |
How often do I need to
water my lavender?
Once lavender is established it's very drought tolerant. Potted plants of course will
need to be watered a little more often than those planted in the ground.
|
 |
What kind of soil does
lavender need?
Lavender needs well draining soil. If you have hard clay, amend with compost, pea gravel
and/or plant in mounds.
|
 |
Does lavender need fertilizer?
A little bone meal when you plant and again every fall, to promote root growth, and
some lime to sweeten acidic soil. |
 |
My lavender is sprawled
out and real woody. What can I do?
Well, pruning your lavender every fall after it blooms is very important. Prune it back
by about one-half to one-third, never cutting into the wood. To repair woody lavender,
try keeping it pruned back all season preventing it from blooming. This will force the
plant to produce new foliage down in that woody area. If it's too woody, it may need
to be replaced or loved just as it is.

 |
Does lavender have any
pests?
Most pests don't much care for lavender, including deer and rabbits. You will find plenty
of bees, butterflies and an occasional spittle bug. |
 |
What do I do with the
cut flowers?
Oh there's so much you can do; enjoy the fresh flowers, make sachets, sprinkle on your
carpet or pet areas. Lavender is a natural flea and moth repellent. |
